UFC 63 Predictions

Here we go, here we go! Tonights lineup looks to have some great fights. With a great main event and co-main event, these fights have the potential to go down in highlight history. So let get to business and make some money! Hughes v. BJ Penn - Hughes is looking for redemption after the loss to Penn. Penn is looking to show he's the man to beat although he's accepted the fight short notice after St Pierre dropped out due to injury. Pick = Hughes Swick v. Loiseau - This is oing to be one for the record books. Swick is looking to fight at the top ranks. From Swicks past fights, he's doing a good job. Loiseau is making an appearance after a dissapointing loss to Rich Franklin. I think Swick is more hungry for the win. Pick = Swick Evans v. Lambert - Evans, winner of TUF, is coming in to the show with something to prove. Lambert is one tough cookie, but I think Evans will take this match. Pick = Evans Stay tuned as I write more picks...

Alessio, Alves to Meet on October 10th

By Thomas Gerbasi Welterweight contenders John Alessio and Thiago Alves will look to bounce back from recent UFC losses when they square off at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida on Tuesday, October 10th. Tickets for this event, which is headlined by the final showdown between Tito Ortiz and Ken Shamrock, are sold out, but fight fans can view all the action on Spike TV beginning at 8pm ET. A Vancouver native with a 23-9 mixed martial arts record, Alessio is coming off a close decision loss to highly touted Diego Sanchez in his last UFC bout on May 27th, but has scored a submission victory over Alex Serdyukov in a subsequent WEC match. Against Alves, he hopes to nab his first UFC win. “He’s an aggressive fighter, which will play well into my fight style because he’ll come right at me, allowing me to counter effectively,” said ‘The Natural’. “I also think my jiu-jitsu is better than his also.” American Top Team’s Alves (15-4, 2-2 in the Octagon) will probably have something to say about that on October 10th, especially considering that he will be fighting in his adopted home state of Florida. “He (Alessio) looks to have good hands and wrestling skills, but this is my hometown and I feel very confident that with the support of my team and fans here that I will win,” said ‘The Pitbull’, who lost to fellow contender Jon Fitch in his last UFC bout, breaking a two fight Octagon win streak.

Hughes-Penn II: Too Close to Call

Extreme Fighting Videos Watch MMA contenders battle for supremacy at Bodog Fight! By Michael DiSanto The build up to UFC 46 suggested that BJ Penn had little, if any, chance of dethroning the most dominant welterweight champion in the history of mixed martial arts. Heading into their January 2004 clash, Matt Hughes appeared to be at the apex of his title reign, enjoying the fruits of a 13-fight winning streak that included five successful defenses of his UFC welterweight title. Penn, on the other hand, was making his Octagon return after taking some time off to reflect on his desire to continue competing. His previous UFC bout was an uninspiring effort resulting in a draw against Caol Uno, a fighter Penn stopped in a lightning-quick 11 seconds in his UFC debut. To make matters worse, Penn, then a career lightweight, was moving up in weight for the first time, making his welterweight debut against Hughes. It seemed, therefore, that all the stars were perfectly aligned for another dominant victory by the reigning champion. Read the rest of this entry »

Godzilla Attacks The Pond on September 23rd

By Thomas Gerbasi You could say Gabe Ruediger was working against a stacked deck from the start. Entering the world of professional fighting in October of 2002 at the age of 25, the native of Topanga Canyon, California, got a rude welcome in his first bout, getting stopped by Sam Wells. All of a sudden, the dreams of soaring through the MMA world unbeaten and retiring at the top with some gaudy and unblemished record had disappeared, and for each subsequent fight, the aspiring mixed martial artist had to get over the stigma of being the 0-1 guy. “To be honest, it took a lot of fights for people to realize that I had a skill set,” said Ruediger, who is 10-1 since that opening loss, and who is making his UFC debut on September 23rd against Melvin Guillard at UFC 63. “In the fight game, you’re only as good as your last fight, and a loss can hurt you. But for me, that loss taught me so much and I feel fortunate. I obviously didn’t want to lose, but it taught me about preparation and proper training techniques, about having a good corner, and there’s a whole aspect that came from losing that fight. I don’t want to say that losing is beneficial, but I would hope that people who do lose take it as part of the learning curve.” Read the rest of this entry »
